AFF - Level 1
This is an intensive course for anyone who is serious about becoming
a qualified skydiver. Level 1 is the first of 8 levels all consisting
of training and 1 jump.
Your level 1 training provides the basis of the training for further
levels. As a result you should try to complete the levels as close
together as possible. We book your Level 1 course. When you have
successfully completed this level you will then book further levels
with your Instructor. See AFF progression
for more details about levels 2-8. The course is designed to be done
in a short time. It is possible to do all 8 levels in a matter of days
!
Although it is sometimes possible to train and jump on the same day we advise that you allow 2 days to complete the Level 1 course. With a maximum of 3 people per Instructor the course begins with a minimum of 6 hours ground school training. The training covers all aspects of your skydive. You will learn about the parachute system you are using, safety procedures, how to exit the aircraft, how to stay in control in freefall, to deploy your canopy and steer down to the designated landing area.
All of these and more will be practised on the ground until your BPA Instructor is completely satisfied that you are ready to skydive !
Your first skydive will be from around 12,000ft. You will exit the aircraft with 2 Instructors, one holding on either side. You will freefall to a height of 5,000ft before opening your parachute. To help you with your early landings you will be wearing a radio. This enables your Instructor to give you direction should it be required.
Ground school training will go ahead regardless of weather conditions.
Student parachutists are allowed to jump in wind speeds of up to 15
knots/ 18 mph. Low cloud, rain or wind speeds exceeding 18mph would
delay or postpone your jump. In the event of poor weather conditions
you would simply arrange an alternative date to be at the centre to
complete your jump.
Equipment
All
the equipment you need is provided by the centre. The parachute is a
large ‘square’ ( ram air ) canopy. Two parachutes ( a main & a
reserve ) are always carried.
Modern parachute equipment places
both main and reserve on your back using a container and harness which
is light and comfortable to wear. Student equipment also has an
Automatic Activation Device ( AAD ) fitted to the reserve parachute for
your additional safety.
A jumpsuit, goggles, helmet ( fitted with radio ) and altimeter are also provided.
Comfortable clothing is advisable and trainers are ideal footwear.
